PRANAYAMA SERIES: BREATHWORK FOR ANXIETY - Moksha Yoga

PRANAYAMA SERIES: BREATHWORK FOR ANXIETY

– WITH EMMA PALMER

So much more than simply breathing practices, the true essence of Prāṇāyāma is working with the anatomy, physiology and subtle energetics of respiration to control the vital force that is present in all dynamic aspects of life. Prāṇā is translated as the “first unit of energy” found in all living and non-living beings, and is the nourishment and sustenance that gives us our sense of aliveness and vitality.

The current of Prāṇā resides within our nervous system and therefore working with different Prāṇāyāma techniques changes our physiological makeup – subsequently influencing our mood, sleep, how we think, feel and manage stress, and ultimately impacts our overall mental, emotional and physiological wellbeing. Prāṇāyāma in essence has the power to shift our state of being and contributes considerably to the way we move through the experiences of our daily lives.

The first of our Prāṇāyāma Series focuses on breathwork practices for managing the powerful physiological triggers and reactions to anxiety. We will break down the anatomical and physiological responses to anxiety and discover how we can couple mindfulness practices with Prāṇāyāma techniques to hold the space while the energy of anxiety moves its way through and out of the body. As the invasive and overwhelming nature of anxiety creates a shift in the nervous system and influences our breathing, we will explore ways of nurturing ourselves through the regulation of these responses and map new pathways for when the first signs of anxiousness begin to arise.

Learning these techniques doesn’t mean that anxiety goes away but, in those moments when we feel hijacked by a habitual response to what feels insurmountable and overwhelming, places tools at our disposal that provide an opportunity for taking back control, rather than the anxiety taking control of us. We’d love you to join Emma Palmer on this expedition into the sacred yogic art of Prāṇāyāma as we breathe life into these techniques for supporting you in your daily life to embrace its challenges with greater ease and agency.
