PRANAYAMA FOR SLEEP

– WITH EMMA PALMER

When we don’t get enough sleep, or sufficiently high quality sleep, our mental and systemic physical health is impacted exponentially. Science has shown that sleeplessness commonly leads to a weakened immune system, inability to focus on tasks, enervation, low mood, lack of enthusiasm for life and poor nutritional choices to name but a few. It may come as no surprise that one of the most common causes of sleeplessness is stress, resulting in the inability to mentally switch off at night and causing the nervous system to remain irrationally alert rather than supporting our body to deeply rest.

Sleep patterns are also influenced by powerful emotions such as grief, worry, anxiety, trauma and anger, while habitual patterns such as going to bed with undigested food or using electronic devises late into the evening all contribute to creating a regular cycle of low quality sleep. While adopting healthier sleep and lifestyle habits over the longer term are invaluable to rebalancing sleeping cycles, there are a variety of Prāṇāyāma practices that have a more immediate impact on supporting our biochemistry and nervous system to invite and sustain a deeply restful and healing night’s sleep.

In our Prāṇāyāma for Sleep workshop you’ll discover, experience and take away a range of Prāṇāyāma and mindfulness techniques for rebalancing your sleep cycles and welcoming increased vitality and focus back into your waking life. This exploration into the Yogic art of Prāṇāyāma is suitable for anyone who feels they could benefit from redressing their current sleep patterns, as well as those clinically diagnosed with insomnia or working night shifts who feel it’s time to recalibrate the circadian rhythms.

MOKSHA PRANAYAMA SERIES

So much more than simply breathing practices, the true essence of Prāṇāyāma is working with the anatomy, physiology and subtle energetics of respiration to control the vital force that is present in all dynamic aspects of life. Prāṇā is translated as the “first unit of energy” found in all living and non-living beings, and is the nourishment and sustenance that gives us our sense of aliveness and vitality.

The current of Prāṇā resides within our nervous system and therefore working with different Prāṇāyāma techniques changes our physiological makeup – subsequently influencing our mood, sleep, how we think, feel and manage stress, and ultimately impacts our overall mental, emotional and physiological wellbeing. Prāṇāyāma in essence has the power to shift our state of being and contributes considerably to the way we move through the experiences of our daily lives.
