PUNARAJATI: THE SACRED TEACHINGS OF REBIRTH

– A YOGA INTENSIVE WITH EMMA PALMER

The sacred teachings of Yoga recognise that in order for us to experience true liberation, known as Mokṣa, we must find ways to fully embody the teachings of letting go. The ancient texts refer to the need for understanding, openness and surrender to the realisation that in any given situation we are continually moving through the cycles of birth, life, death and rebirth that underpin our every life experience. Yet the more Western mentality lends itself to a tendency for holding onto all and everything, driven by a sense of fear that creates inner conflict during times when letting go is the only true answer.

We might hold onto relationships that no longer serve us and are detrimental to the very essence of who we are; or we hold onto jobs that no longer fulfil us because we are fearful of what could be on the other side of our decision to leave. Yet in truth we are being reborn all the time through the natural cycles of change we face each and every day, and it is our own resistance to what is versus how we would prefer things to be that causes us most distress. Through the teachings of Yoga we can come to see that surrendering to our experience as it is and letting go of the past we have outgrown leads us to a sense of liberation beyond our imaginings and the peace we so desperately seek.

“Love taught me to die with dignity that I might come forth anew in splendour. Born once of flesh, then again of fire, I was reborn a third time to the sound of my name humming haikus in heaven’s mouth.” – Aberjhani

Anais Nin explains it perfectly: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom”. We too recognise, consciously or otherwise, that ultimately we will only ever experience pain in clinging to what has ended and served us with its teachings. Cultivating awareness of when we have outgrown old ways of being and thinking empowers us to navigate the layers of our own phoenix process – we step into new skin more aligned with who we have become rather than who we once were, and as such welcome the rebirth completely.

Our July Yoga Intensive will guide you on a liberating journey of inner rebirth through a carefully crafted Krama of Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Dhyana (meditation), Prarthana (prayer), Mantra (chanting) with the ancient Harmonium and a deep Śavāsana of sound healing – all interlaced with the rich wisdom teachings of Punarājāti. Just like the phoenix we will welcome the fires of transformation to sweep through the old layers and make way for the new to rise from the ashes in our own rebirth with a greater sense of self belief, conscious awareness and alignment with our Truth. There is nothing to fear in allowing the shell we have outgrown to perish – there is only the blossoming of new life beyond.
