UNTYING THE KNOTS OF GRANTHI

– A YOGA INTENSIVE WITH EMMA PALMER

In the words of Adayashanti – “enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth” – and we hold these untruths in the sacred knots, known in Yoga as Granthi. These knots play a major role in how we feel at every level of our being, which then influences how we experience our daily life. These locks also correspond to the energy blockages held in the nervous system from our past Samskaras and subsequently influence the flow of Prana. When the energy flow of Prana becomes stagnant we begin to experience lethargy, unexplained low mood and a lacklustre experience of life.

As Samskaras exist in the subconscious mind of Chitta, it can be challenging to tune into why we feel the way we do and connect with what is needed for us to generate the necessary shifts. Whatever is unexpressed and unaddressed, whatever is held in these knots, whatever is stagnant and needing to rise, reveals itself as our practice of asana dissolves the knots and brings to the surface what we are ready to face. Modern science is now also recognising how unexpressed emotions manifest in our cellular body and, once these emotional blocks make their way into our conscious awareness where they can be processed and released, healing and regeneration is restored.

“A genuine smile distributes the cosmic current, Prana, to every body cell. The happy man is less subject to disease, for happiness actually attracts into the body a greater supply of the Universal life energy.” – Paramahansa Yogananda

As we being to untie these energetic knots, we will connect with the ancient practices of Yoga to allow the free flow of energy to return to its natural state. Through the sequence of Vinyasa Krama, interwoven with the breath, the Vāyus fan the fires of the alchemist’s furnace as the waves of energy, Vritti, begin to shift and move; guiding us through the pathways of transformation that dissolve the knots and allow the energy of Prana to find its own rhythm once more.

The Krama created for this intensive includes Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Dhyana (meditation), Prarthana (prayer) and Mantra (chanting) to guide you on a journey of exploration and Svadhyaya (self-enquiry).  We will explore the three sacred Granthi (the Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra Granthi) and how these three knots prevent the free flow of prana through the energy channels and centres, as well as the physical locks (known as Bandha) that hold this free flowing energy within its calm and rightful place. When we come from this aligned space and “crumble away the untruth” we begin to feel a clarity and awareness that the ability to return to this free flowing state remains eternally accessible, waiting patiently for us to find it when we need it most.

“The only thing you have to know is that opening allows energy in, and closing blocks it out. Now you have to decide whether or not you want this energy. How high do you want to get? How much love do you want to feel? How much enthusiasm do you want to have for the things you do? If enjoying a full life means experiencing high energy, love, and enthusiasm all the time, then don’t ever close.” Michael A. Singer
