YOGA NIDRA - Moksha Yoga

YOGA NIDRA

– WITH EMMA PALMER

Yoga Nidrā dates as far back as 1000BC from the Sāṅkhya philosophy and is one of the most powerfully beneficial practices for those who experience a poor quality of sleep, insomnia, stress, burnout and anxiety.

Literally translated to mean “Yogic Sleep”, it is a technique that induces a deep state of conscious relaxation throughout the physical, mental and emotional body, invoking feelings of calm, peace and nourishment while assisting the rebalance of our circadian rhythms and sleep/wake cycles.

The most recent research suggests that practicing Yoga Nidrā for just 20 minutes produces equivalent restorative benefits of between two to four hours of sleep and deep cellular rest. Ongoing research is also demonstrating how Yoga Nidrā has a significant impact of lowering the psychosomatic effects of stress, by activating the prefrontal cortex whilst reducing amygdala activity relating to the fight/flight/freeze aspect of our nervous system.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS CLASS

This Yoga Nidrā class is a fully guided practice that will begin with gentle Prāṇāyāma techniques to softly transport your awareness from the outer world to the inner, before moving your conscious focus to different aspects of the body and self on a journey through the Pancha Maya Kośa into the sanctuary of stillness at the centre of your being. Practiced laying down in a supine position, it invites you to the edge of sleep (rather than into sleep itself) and as your body sinks deeper into the process you will find yourself experiencing a deep state of rest that is neither wakefulness nor sleep.

One of the most potent times to benefit from the reenergising qualities of Yoga Nidrā is to practice between the hours of 2pm-5pm and as such this class is offered from 2pm-3pm, available both face-to-face in the Śāla or as live online experience from the comfort of your own space. In studio, props are provided to support the spine and knees, along with blankets and pillows to ensure you remain comfortably warm for the duration of the practice.

This offering can be accessed using any regular Class Pass or Unlimited Membership. We look forward to sharing the benefits of this ancient practice of Yoga Nidrā as a profound tonic for the demands of fast-paced living in the modern world, both through its instant relaxation and revitalisation effects as well as its longer-term support in cultivating deeply restful sleep patterns.
